Home Business Tips Week 6 – Choosing a Home Business Name
Subject: Choosing a Home Business Name
Hello Fellow Entrepreneur,
How How is your home business (HB) coming along? We’re doing well here at SpidersMarktingWeb HB Tips.
Tell me have you gotten around to….
Choosing a Name for Your Business? By the way… I spell it Biz in my Email versions to help get these past the missused mail filters, just in case you ever forward this information to others.
Back on subject – One of the most important things your Home Business startup needs is a name. Your name will be the very first thing that almost all of your clients see. It’s also a very key factor in your ranking for search engines.
You have to pick a name that says something about you and your business that people in your target market will remember easily, and gives them an idea of what your company does.
A good basic idea is to use your last name followed by what you do. Like Waddell’s Internet Marketing or Anderson’s Social Network Training. You could also add the town where you live in to the name like Anderson’s Seattle Plumbing. Search engines love this last one for local listings.
You can also leave out your name and simply become Spokane Social Network Training. This makes you sound like the first choice locally and will help target your local area.
If you are going to be dealing with the big companies you may even want to consider a more corporate sounding name. Think of a word to describe your business then add the word “Consulting” or “Enterprizes” to it.
If you’re going for a trendier home grown type of market you might want a less formal name like Kathy’s Scrapbooking.
You may want to name your business after an animal (Blue Dog RV), and use that animal in your logo too. If you don’t have a big marketing budget (most startups don’t), this is a good way to get started branding your business right from the start. For example take Geico. They use that gecko lizard on everything. What do you remember when you think of car insurance?
Always try to use as short a name as possible. If your name is fairly long, you may want to try taking two or more of the words that describe your business and then shorten them to make it one single word. So you end up with an acronym like IHOP (International House of Pancakes)… this is a great way to express what you do without having long hard to remember names.
Last of all, when nothing else seems to fit make up a name that’s catchy. Just play with your words until you come up with a name that sounds right and the best part is it will be completely unique to your business making you the trend setter… just like Google did!
Whatever you do make sure your business name is easy to pronounce, spell and remember while still telling the reader something about what you do. I didn’t know about this info and so didn’t follow these rules of thumb on one of our companies in another niche and it’s been an uphill battle… even though we were the first and still the largest in the field. It really made it tough to keep on the top of the search engines and to let people know what it is we do.
Don’t make the same mistake I did! You now know better.
Once you have a few names picked out (yes, I said a few…) make sure you check to make sure no one else is using them. You don’t want to get your business started then find out that the name you want is taken or worse, trade marked. You may even want to do some testing or have a few friends look them over and see which one is best remembered and lets them know what you do at the same time.
Well, I hope that’s been helpful to you, I know you won’t be taking your Home Business name for granted any longer… next week we’ll go over some tips to getting organized.
Until next week, here’s to your success!
Wes Waddell
